Precision machining case study: high-purity molybdenum pins

Korea Tungsten Co., Ltd. specializes in machining high-density, hard-to-machine metals and rare metals. Precision molybdenum pins, made for the most demanding environments in modern industry, are the clearest demonstration of our machining capability.
These parts serve as electrodes and fasteners inside semiconductor equipment, display manufacturing systems, dispenser nozzles and ultra-high-temperature industrial machinery. They are small and easy to overlook, yet absolutely critical to the system as a whole.
Why Molybdenum?
Molybdenum occupies a distinctive position among engineering materials. Its thermal stability is outstanding, holding structural integrity at ultra-high temperatures where most metals melt into liquid. Its thermal expansion coefficient is also very low, so it holds its shape and dimensions precisely through severe thermal cycling.
Where defects are never acceptable and sustained high heat is a given, molybdenum is the surest answer. But machining it into the precise geometry the customer requires is itself the most demanding part of the work.
The precision machining process: four stages
1. Ultra-precision micro turning
Starting from high-purity molybdenum wire or bar stock, we carry out precision turning to bring the outside diameter to the required dimension within extremely tight tolerances. Long, slender parts deflect easily under cutting force, so controlling that deflection at high spindle speed is the hardest and most critical skill in the job.
2. Precision forming and electrical discharge machining (EDM)
Depending on the specification, we apply precision forming and EDM to produce complex geometries, consistent curvature and step features accurately. Every part in a production lot holds exactly the same dimensions and tolerances, with no single deviation or compromise.
3. Surface polishing and ultrasonic cleaning
Every pin is precision polished to minimize friction during assembly and to remove the micro-burrs left by machining completely. Ultrasonic cleaning then removes residual cutting fluid and fine surface contamination to a level invisible to the eye.
4. Vacuum packing with silica gel
Molybdenum oxidizes readily once exposed to moisture and oxygen. Immediately after cleaning, each part is vacuum sealed with silica gel enclosed, preserving the material's quality so it can be fitted on the floor the moment it arrives.

The machining problems nobody talks about
The very properties that make molybdenum valuable make it, paradoxically, very hard to machine. Three challenges define precision molybdenum pin machining:
Real precision goes beyond the machine
The smaller the part, the narrower the margin for error, and controlling it fully takes highly specialized skill. If a single molybdenum pin fails inside semiconductor equipment, the cost is not a replacement part — it is downtime and a quality audit, and the losses are substantial.
Korea Tungsten holds to complete precision at every stage, from machining through inspection to packaging. The true value of a precision part is realized only when it is delivered in perfect condition and works without the slightest deviation.
