KEY FEATURES

Sphericity sets the accuracy

The rounder it is, the more even the contact and the slower the wear.

AlN Heater Cross-Section

The lapping grade sets the sphericity and the surface roughness.

01

High hardness

High Hardness

HRA 90 and above. Deformation and wear are low through repeated contact.

02

Sphericity

Sphericity

Lapping holds the sphericity, reducing measurement error and leakage.

03

High density

High Density

Heavier than a steel ball, giving greater inertia and shielding at the same size.

Density by material

Cemented carbide (WC)14.9
Steel7.8
Ceramic3.2

Density g/cm³. The higher the figure, the heavier at the same size.

Why sphericity

A valve ball has to meet the seat across a face or it leaks. Sphericity is the leak rate.

Surface roughness

A rough surface abrades the mating part. A mirror finish reduces friction.

DESIGN PRECISION

The grade is set to the application

In a ball, diameter and sphericity are what distinguish the product.

Product cross-section

In the same ball, raising the grade reduces leakage and wear and adds process stages.

± 0.001mm

Sphericity grade

Metrology and valves call for a higher grade.

Drawingbasis

Diameter

Diameter is set to the mounting specification.

Carbideor alloy

Material selection

Cemented carbide where hardness is critical, alloy where density is.

We do not pick a specification, we develop it with you. (Give us the operating conditions and the mating material, and we will work out the grade with you.)

LEAD TIME

Fabrication and Lead Time

This product is made to your drawing. Here is the process, step by step.

STEP 01

Requirements received

Send us the diameter, sphericity grade, mating material and service conditions.

Reply within 1 day

STEP 02

Specification review

We review the material, grade and surface finish. Where useful we propose a grade adjustment as well.

2 – 4 days

STEP 03

Forming · lapping

Formed and then lapped to bring the sphericity and surface roughness to specification.

By agreement, depending on the production schedule

STEP 04

Inspection · delivery

Diameter and sphericity are measured, and the part ships with a test report. Repeat orders to the same specification skip the review stage.

By agreement, depending on the production schedule

Minimum quantity

From small quantities

Varies with diameter and grade.

Standard lead time

About 2 – 3 weeks

From drawing approval. A higher grade adds lapping stages.

Supplied with it

Test report

Diameter and sphericity measurements are sent with the delivery.

HANDLING

Handling precautions

These apply to refractory metals in general. Service life depends heavily on how the parts are handled.

01

01

Do not touch the parts with bare hands after unpacking. Oil from fingerprints carbonizes at high temperature and becomes a contaminant.

02

02

The material is weak against impact and bending. Tungsten is brittle at room temperature and can crack if dropped.

03

03

Do not heat above 500°C in air; oxidation accelerates sharply. Always use the parts in a vacuum or an inert atmosphere.

04

04

Avoid rapid heating and cooling. On first use, we recommend pre-heating (aging) at low current.

05

05

Store indoors in a dry place and keep the moisture-barrier packaging intact.

If your installation or operating conditions are unusual, our engineers will review them in advance. Send a drawing or your process conditions and we will start by selecting the right material with you.
