With refractory metals, even an identical drawing calls for the machining method to be set again according to the geometry and the application. That method, built up through making research parts and special parts, is Korea Tungsten's technology.

OVERVIEW

Tungsten and molybdenum have high melting points and break easily at room temperature. Even with the same drawing, tools and conditions have to be set again for each material and geometry, which makes deciding the machining method a development task in itself.

We take the customer's requirements and drawing, review the material, decide which processes to combine and how, then build a prototype. Conditions are revised as we review the results, and the method builds up through that cycle.

Three pillars of technical development

Korea Tungsten's technical development runs along three lines, but they are not separate. The methods gained in custom work are organized by the research center, and some of them end up as patents.

What we do most

Made to drawing or sample

Most of what Korea Tungsten machines is made to order. Send us a drawing or a sample and we will review whether and how we can machine it, then reply.

A representative development case

Chrome copper · tungsten composite electrode

A resistance welding electrode: a high-purity tungsten tip, chosen for high-temperature strength and wear resistance, bonded to the end of a chrome-copper body with good electrical conductivity and heat dissipation. The job was to make two metals with completely different properties into one part.

Technical challenge

The first challenge was bonding chrome copper and tungsten — two metals with completely different physical properties — without any gap. After bonding, the long, slender tip had to be machined to fine dimensions with the center axis still true.

We ran the bonding process, then combined turning and step machining, then fine machining of the tip. The work called for both hard-metal machining know-how and the ability to design a combined process.

We achieved a defect-free bond and a tip that meets the drawing specification. The clean step profile and the precise tip groove translate into current focusing efficiency and part life in high-temperature resistance welding.
